It is your life- Take control!

Life’s taking me for a ride and I’m its rodeo.
Not the kind you would think, not a Spaniard
I’m just the one from my own backyard.

An important crossroad of life I am in.
There’s more to lose than to win
To accept, decline or just think about it,
Decision making is draining a lot of courage and wit

One wrong move and I may have start from the Ice Age.
Nothing that can measure the loss, nor is there a gauge.
Not ready for all the pressure, the face-offs,
I sense the future, all the mock and scoffs.

Even after summoning all my extra- terrestrial strengths
And efforts which extend to inexplicable lengths,
They, those Pummelling thoughts never grow tired drowning my will.
Am I to beguile myself from those dreary thoughts or should I stay still?

Crazy as it may seem, reconciliation (with myself) seems a ghastly task.
That face across the street, is it me or is it just another mask?
The moment has come to ask myself what I want.
Will I give an answer or will I stray? I’m no truant.

Life’s taking me for a ride and I’m its rodeo.
Not the kind you would think, not a Spaniard
I’m just the one from my own backyard.

There is not much to worry, this is not a dirge.
If it is anything, I have let a few things merge.
I’ll set things straight and when I tune the radio,
I’ll hear a new tune- It’s my life and I’m its rodeo!

A rivulet a few miles off Mallelatheertham , into the the jungle. Serenity unlimited!

The chill in the spine!

 These pics are up here after I've heard some good comments about them. One word used by most folks after seeing these pics-- "CREEPY". Check 'em out! :)... Yes, you can save these photographs and use them for whatever you want! Credits appreciated :P.. Free, Free, Free!! :D

I clicked these pics on the day of the Supermoon in the middle of the Srisailam Tiger reserve at around 8:15 pm... It wasn't this dark but I achieved a more creepier look by clicking these photographs on the manual mode.

The settings were approximately :
Aperture-- f/3.5
Shutter Speed- 1/1250 secs
ISO speed- 80

64 years of Freedom- 64 years of INEQUALITY and CORRUPTION!

~~ I decided to complete a few if not all the drafts pending on my blog dashboard. This one was subject to solitary confinement to the dashboard for almost an year now! And this is a delicate topic and I'm definitely inviting brickbats and criticism. The door's open! :D

Happy Independence Day! (Belated though!! :D..I just took a Looooooong time to post this one.. It was almost complete but never found the will to finish it..)

Independence from what? The British?

Are we really an Independent country today? For a country which boasts of its equality towards every religion, language, caste or sex and its Democracy, are the leaders of this country removing the divide which exists in people or are they widening it?

Why do we still have discrimination amongst people?
Why specify castes?
What is the need for reservations, now that India has become more open to changes and has a large number of people working from both sexes and from all castes?  There still is scope for a HUGE improvement when it comes to acceptance of people who belong to the third sex- the eunuchs. I’ll write about it later may be.

With an increasing number of people getting educated, employed and who understand that the country needs to evolve, grow and develop, so they can too, don’t you think the constitution has to undergo some changes. What better than to get rid of this cancerous growth called Reservation from our system?
While I sometimes feel happy that a few make good use of Reservation by putting their heart into their studies and doing justice to the Government’s initiative, I detest it “MOST” times when I look at students who attend classes just for the sake of their attendance, so they can get their scholarship fees which almost always turns into beer bottles by the end of the week. The cycle just continues. And some of these students are from really well-to-do families, each with dozens of acres and farms and shops and a healthy business. Doesn’t their conscience ask them why they aren’t spending their money on their kids’ education and growth, when they actually can?

Isn’t the Government creating a divide by classifying  the common man as SC/ST/OC or WHATEVER!??  My initial few days at college were spent just by filling forms which asked me about my caste, religion and sex. During that process, I learnt that a good friend of mine was a Scheduled Cast, SO WHAT?

Reservations are alright if the government checks on the  background of a person before awarding it. If a person is not well to do, irrespective of what caste/sex/religion he/she is, reservations can be awarded.  Merely, showing his/her caste to procure a reservation is madness.  Whatever happens to the equality mantra? No wonder clashes between sections of the society still exist! I’ve never thought about what caste or religion before making friends. How does it differentiate people? It does not! People differentiate themselves. And by emphasizing on different castes, and dissecting the population between a whole lot of unwanted caste and creed, the government is actually keeping the tradition alive, where an upper caste person thinks twice before interacting with one from a lower caste. The lower caste hates the upper caste and it goes on.
          I, right now hate myself for using the caste examples. I never do, but it was necessary.

FCI go-downs in Bihar have over 100 Quintals of rice rotting and going waste. All this, in a country where the poor die of hunger.
A below poverty line family is entitled to 15 Kilograms gets 13 kilos of  subsidised rice and 2 kilos of rotten rice. 2 kilos of rotten rice is “COMPULSORY”!! Compulsory? Some use this as cattle food and for some, it’s a choice between an empty stomach and rotten rice.

Today(4th Apr 2011), Anna Hazare brought forth the “Lokpal bill”(click to read more about it) issue again, asking for it to be implemented. He’s going to start an indefinite hunger fast until it is implemented.  Just like the Ombudsman institution which is highly practiced in the Scandinavian countries, the Lokpal enables the body to investigate into any complaint either through the government or a private investigating organisation. The Lokpal will have total control over corruption and promises transparency within the Political, Organisational and any circuit where fraud and crime can be committed.

Wishing for a better India by the next Independence Day! No matter how much corrupt the politicians are, how many leeches exist within our society, we will always hold our heads high while calling ourselves Indian. Imagine the amount of pride we would gain when we belong to a new India which truly treats everyone equally, which makes proper use of the taxes deducted from the hard earned money and is led by a solid unit with exemplary visions. I wish!

India-- Cricket World Cup 2011 Champions!!

Woooohoooo!! We are the Cricket World Champions now. The Indian team has done it!! Victorious over Sri Lanka, the Indian team showed great sportsmanship, determination and unyielding courage to win theCricket World Cup 2011 final against the very strong and balanced Sri Lankan side. It was a day when the Indian team was exceptionally flawless as a fielding unit. There were dives and desperate, yet confident attempts everywhere. Why? It was 'THE' day when Gauti dived to save himself when India was batting. That gave me that extra sense of belief that India WILL win this epic match:D.

          Well, may be the Sri Lankan side wasn’t all that balanced, attributing to Angelo Mathews’ injury which kept him out of play. With him injured, they were one batsman and bowler less. They opted for Suraj Randiv- who didn’t prove effective at all! The start was a shaky one, with confusion over the toss. The toss happened twice and the Sri Lankans went on to bat first and they amassed quite some runs, thanks to Mahela’s super awesome batting and a few slog shots from their tail-ender.

@ Zia's Place. Great host and a great friend!
I saw the first innings of the match at Zia’s place along with Prashant, Vj Karan and Somu. When the first innings finished, I told them I had to get back since I had to watch the match with family too. Came back and watched the second innings of the match with family. India’s start was super shaky!! Sehwag goes out for a duck and Sachin got out with 18 runs to his credit; we were hoping he’d become the tournament top scorer. He only needed 19 more runs to become the top scorer—Alas!

          Being the sentimental Indian with respect to cricket, I changed places, hoping things would get better. I found myself a place – a room away, with the television in the far end of the other room. Thanks to my Alien eye-sight, I had no trouble following the scores and other statistics. The change in place actually worked! Gautam Gambhir played a good knock with Virat Kohli and then with Dhoni. I moved a bit to get my laptop charger and he got out!! That only made me more careful and I was a breathing statue for the next few minutes. Dhoni along with Yuvraj then played what seemed like one of the best knocks off his bat! It was 72 runs required off 71 balls! I then chucked all the superstition, found a chair and went all guns, cheering India for every run, every boundary and anything which increased the runs on the scoreboard. The decibel levels in that room suddenly increased to an insane level and after the next 40 minutes of the same insane cheering and whistling, I witnessed the chota-helicopter shot off Dhoni’s blade. INDIA WINS THE WORLD CUP!! I shouted with joy, whistled—so much that I ran out of air in my lungs. The next 30 minutes, no one could hear anything. Everyone was shouting, lighting fireworks, congratulating each other. It was crazy!
I had to click this. I didn't wait for the auto-focus. But, what the hell!!

I then received a phone call from friends who joined the group at Zia’s place, asking me to come there so we could all go for a long drive, probably the city outskirts. I took a few friends along, reached Zia’s place. We congratulated each other; spoke at length to friends I haven’t seen in 6 months and we then packed ourselves into Murali’s mammoth Safari, headed towards Shamirpet. The drive was crazy!!. I was a little uncomfortable, thanks to the knee bruise from the accident I had recently; but all the pain disappeared when we got out of the windows, shouting slogans, cheering Team India and taking pictures of each other.
Me in my Blue shirt :D, Naveen anna and Ramesh with half our bodies outside the car. Tonsils-- Hello-- still hanging?:D

About half an hour later, we reached a dhaba, which obviously was filled with people who were all talking about the match, waving the Indian Flag, wearing the Indian cricket team’s jerseys and some with the Indian colours on their arms and faces. It was a splendid scene. Everyone was wishing everyone. No one was a stranger! A little while later, we switched to music, danced- strangers joined us too. After a super blah blah session, we ordered food, drinks and started back at around 5 am. Super awesome!! The feeling still hasn’t left and Indians will be more Indian for a few more days!! Jai Hind! \m/

Naveen Anna, Me and Pramod. The ever so beautiful Indian Flag behind us :D

~~Day 3 of my blog-a-day for 22 days marathon. Memoirs of a Drunken Junkie shuts down on the 22nd of April :-)

A day to remember!

And why not? India is in the world cup finals and will win it! I’ve given my word to a couple of friends that I’d watch the match with them.  We planned this one especially after watching the historic win over Pakistan in the Quarter-Finals of the Cricket World Cup 2011together at a local pub. The crowd that day was hysteric, filled with a zillion thoughts- all focused on just one thing; India ‘has’ to win over Pakistan. The fanatic in every Indian broke his silence, got out of the hibernation mode and cheered non-stop with eyes swollen with hopes of winning the match against Pakistan and then winning the world cup!

That’s my plan and I also have to watch the match with family. So, I think I’ll watch the first innings at home and then watch the second one at Zia’s place or vice versa. I definitely can’t be in two places at the same time :P.. I wonder why I can’t? One should work towards devising something which can enable a person to be in two places at the same time. It’d be the best invention ever. Or may be the most notorious one too!

Well, even an alien like me can’t stray away from all the Cricket madness. I’m cricket-crazy too. And this time, it’s gotten the better of me. Hope India wins the World Cup today. It will only be another  Diwali. 2011 will celebrate 3 Diwalis!! Woaah quite something eh! :D..

Good luck Team India.. Chak De. Pluck De... Every thing De. Just Win I say! (oooh that was a rhyme too :P)..

Am I trying to rhyme? Naah.. that’s just the miserable me trying something lol:D.. Get back to watching cricket now!!:P

The day draws near!

All good things come to an end and so my blog has to too! The 4 year long journey was quite a ride, quite a platform and an experience sharing forum of a different kind. What started off as just another blog in the blog-o-sphere, slowly built itself within me, making me weave a poem at times, a random blah blah post or a serious topic otherwise.
          I must admit I was getting addicted to the blogosphere at quite an alarming pace and it was just natural for a person like me, who hates getting addicted to anything/anyone, to let go of it. The plan to suspend this blog has been a pending one and I chose April to bid goodbye to it. It was in April that I started my blog 4 years ago and April it is that it shuts down; on my birthday to be more precise :- ).

I’ve some weird plans during this period though! I intend to write a post a day! 22 posts in one month must be a record of sorts. Won’t it be? May be not!! :P. I’ll award myself one, though \:D/... Don’t expect quality content in every one of my posts—not that I have a good fan-base for my blog. I almost always get anonymous comments and I think I’ll challenge Oxford to make ‘anonymous’ synonymous with a new word called ‘annoy-mous’. It’s annoying when people comment without signing in or even without their names. Yet, I’ve been approving any comment which isn’t a spam! Phew!!

~~~I drew it \:D/ :P~~~
          A super huge “THANK YOU” to everyone who’s commented on my blog, everyone who’s given me suggestions, corrected me(no one has :P) and has just read my blog without commenting. Psst—The secret’s out.. I don’t write my blogs actually.. There’s this mystery guy who does all the writing et al. He’s quitting on me so I’m kinda forced to shut this blog. If any of you can write for me or find someone who can write for me, without taking ANY credit, I may re-open the blog :P.. That’d be legendary eh! Sure’d!
We’ll that’s about it for today. Happy All Fools day. I tried fooling a couple of folks by posting an India-Pakistan Match Fixing audio clip. No one got Punk’d! :-(... Poor me  :-(   :-(.... and the sad smileys go on :P... Chao for now.. 21 more posts... He’s asking for a Thinking Cap .. Someone has one? Lend it to me for the next 21 days:D..
Have loads of fun—eat some bun!
Wake up with the Sun—do a run!
Get ya work done—play with ya son!
Buy him a toy gun—make sure he’s the ONE!
Muhahaha I can still rhyme.. Bye :D
20th February 2010!-- Full of Mixed Feelings
Yeah, I know this post has been pending for an year now. But, as promised, I’ve posted it on its first anniversary lol! :D
19th February 2010-- It was just another Friday and the trio- Prashant, Raghu and I, decided to come to work on our bikes. It was earlier that same day that I picked Chandra and met Murthy, his girlfriend, Susan and Ramesh at Imax. We had booked tickets to watch Leader, a Telugu movie which doing quite some rounds about being a movie with a great message. And, it did prove its worth. The movie was good indeed and we headed to work after movie.
On one of our many tea breaks and smoke breaks at work, Chandra and us, the trio, met at the smoker’s area of the IT campus and we discussed everything from office politics to the newest bike on the road and its reviews. Focus then shifted to a bike ride post shift and all of us agreed to a short one. The day quickly passed by with lots of work, training sessions and lots of Table tennis too!!
       At around 3:20 am on 20th February 2010, we descended to the cellar after a couple of Table tennis matches and admired our bikes. Prashant and Raghu led the way out of the cellar, I was behind them and Chandra was my pillion. Friday’s particularly have a lot of vehicles in the parking lot and that day was no different. We zigzagged past the vehicles in the parking lot and it was during one of those moments that the inclination of our bike was so high that, a rear view mirror of a parked 2-wheeler almost brushed us. It was a calculated and intentional move from me but Chandra went hyper, asking me not to perform such manoeuvres. We laughed our way out with me telling him there’s nothing to worry et al. We got out of the Ascendas IT Park and hit the best stretch of road on the opposite side. The three of us rode at an average speed of maybe 90kmph, until we saw a new road being laid towards Gachibowli. We decided to explore that place, since it was made after blasting away beautiful rock formations. It was a mini jungle till about an year ago, with lots of peacocks, snakes and God knows what else! Rumours have it that leopards patrolled that huge patch of rocks and trees too.
              A moderate speed of 40kmph was what we maintained, since there were no street lights and we didn’t know what lay ahead of us. We reached what seemed a dead end, barricaded we saw the sprawling Durgam cheruvu(durgam- mystic, cheruvu- lake) ahead of us. We spoke for a while- discussed how blatant man can be to destroy patches of nature, this way. We planned a short trip within city and agreed to set out immediately, and that is when Prashant wheeled his bike and zoomed. Since we all knew how the road was, we had that extra sense of confidence in riding fast. I overtook him and Raghu was right behind me, followed by Prashant and we were going at speeds no less than 80kmph. Chandra, all this while kept telling me to go slow- I paid no heed as usual. A minute later, I was shocked to see there was no road ahead of me. The road took a sharp right curve and there was no way I could brake completely at that speed. It wasn’t a problem since we could all do those sharp manoeuvres without braking, by inclining ourselves and our bikes , thereby creating that curving radius seem easier. But, life had other plans for us. I braked a little bit, which was required, only to realise loose gravel under the tires. The bike skid a little bit. It was here, that I feared I couldn’t control the bike. If I wouldn’t brake, there’d be a pile of metal and flesh on one of the many boulders on the road side. I had to make a curve, even if it meant we’d skid and fall down ON THE ROAD. And so, I did! I braked a little more and this time, the rear tire moved to the left. That was just the skid I was looking for. I accelerated and we were off the curve, but no more in control of the bike.
Those few seconds between the final skid and the fall seemed like an eternity. Chandra almost dislodged my shoulder blades by pressing my shoulders that tight. After what seemed to be an eon’s time, I sensed my knee touch the tarmac and suddenly, everything happened in slow motion. Me and my Unicorn scraped the surface of the road for 20 metres or so and then I saw Chandra roll over me, he was shouting, I guess? His voice was soon succeeded by another metallic sound and I turned back while we were still in motion. I saw Raghu skid in pretty much the same fashion too and I still can’t seem to describe what went through me at that time. It was funny that he followed suit too! I looked further back and saw Prashant brake and come to a proper stop without a skid. That was disappointing(I know! :O) and I exclaimed “SHIT” rather loudly, all this while we were still skidding. I was thinking it would be so cOoL if all of us fell down. Such a weirdly bad thought. Sorry Prashant :P!!
Raghu's Bike-- A wreck!!
 Me and my bike finally stopped about 30 metres from where we first skid and I was stuck under the bike. I instantly pushed my bike aside and checked with Chandra- I was scared he was hurt ‘cos I heard him shout. He said he was alright but looked to be in pain. I was in definite pain too but checked with Raghu and he got up laughing and surprisingly nothing happened to him. His bike was reduced to a wreck, though! Prashant came running and he was laughing too and we had a great laugh. It was then that I looked down and saw the right trouser of my favourite jeans torn to shreds near the knee. An entire patch, the size of my palm was missing on my right trouser. I looked at my right elbow and it was an awful scene. About three inches of flesh, a few centimetres deep was missing and my right palm was beyond recognition too. It was black and with blood near the wrist. Focus shifted to my right leg and I slowly folded whatever was left of my right trouser to my thigh and what we saw was horrible. Half an inch of flesh, the size of a 2 Rupee coin was missing from my right knee. It was bleeding and I could feel the blood soaked sock in my right shoe.
Prashant and Chandra- The best Nurses!
The pain wasn’t that great- maybe ‘cos it needed time to hit me? I don’t know! I still don’t understand how I convinced Prashant, Raghu and Chandra that I would ride my bike till office. We did and we decided to wash the wounds at Cyber Pearl and not at our IT campus. We stopped near a tea stall and got some water to wash my wounds. But lol, how would I wash my wounds, without taking a couple of photographs of myself and Raghu’s bike!! So we had this photoshoot, which I am sure the three of them thought was unnecessary! I took out the med kit from my bike and handed it to them.  They actually finished off with a perfect medical dressing. I just can’t thank them enough for what they did, they probably had a little blood from me, on them. Well, I never thanked them for it.  I won’t either :P... We sat there for a while, laughing about what happened. No one probably realised how badly I was hurt. Not even me! We were all hungry and I insisted we eat something. And lo! We planned to go to Ameerpet and fill our stomachs with a 5:20 am waala early morning breakfast. I rolled my right trouser to an inch above my right knee. I threw my blood soaked right sock. Put on my right shoe and we sped to Ameerpet. No, our speeds weren’t different. We rode at our normal, sensible, traffic rules abiding speeds. What was surprising was, Raghu's bike took all the beating and he wasn't hurt at all, except for some minor scratches. Mine was quite the opposite!! I took all the beating and my bike was super fine, except for the right rear view mirror which was shattered to a beautiful mess :D
                      I still wish someone could have recorded people’s reactions when we reached Ameerpet. I clearly looked a wreck with crape bandages on my right knee and right elbow. Blood here and there, my right trouser over my knees and my left trouser all fine shine. I didn’t give a damn. Ordered some yummy paneer dosa and hogged on it. It was after having breakfast that the pain started to set in! I couldn’t lift my legs over my bike. I did it with discomfort and once I did it, It was hard to keep my leg over the brake. I did it and finally reached home! Everyone was asleep. I didn’t want to wake them up and so, I washed myself a bit and went to the hospital all by myself :D. The doctor looked at the knee and my elbow and said, “There is nothing left to do a stitch! We’ll have to let the flesh and skin grow. What the hell did you do to come up with something this gross?”- I replied, “I was playing basketball and I got toppled and I fell down, scraping the rough surface!”.. I lied. I lied ‘cos I didn’t want the doctor to tell me “Hey! This is an accident case. Go file a case with the Police first!”. May be he wouldn’t but I didn’t want to risk it. I was in no shape to go to the police station, file a case et al for nothing!
The nurse came to dress the wounds. She first gave me a Tetanus shot and she worked her way through the painful dressing procedure. I probably would have agreed to run all the way till the Himalayas in exchange for a painless dressing! All done, I came home and switched the laptop on and saved those bloody photographs from my phone to my lappy. The rest is history! It took me 3 and half weeks to start walking with a limp. Took 3 months to walk properly! Was fun all through. Oh and yeah, I would have agreed to run a circle around the world in exchange for all the subsequent alternate day wound dressings. They were even more painful!!
Like the saying goes- “No Pain, No Gain!”, I am yet to realise the gain!! All those anti-biotics and meds only made my internal resistance weaker and soon, the doctor next door was my best friend last year :D.
I just called Raghu, Chandra and Prashant, to remind them about this day and we had a good laugh again :D. Friends like these are worth the fall, after all eh? – Ooh this probably is the gain after the pain !! :P
And yeah folks, I probably would not be writing this blog post, if I didn’t have my Helmet on! So you know- WEAR IT to SAVE IT! ;-)
It’s a Contagious Disease. Fall Prey!
This disease is the most difficult to contract. It is contagious but the human body seems to defend it off pretty well with all its valour. Unlike other diseases, this one’s way different. People these days are so caught up in their own world, their own acts that they’ve forgotten the basics of everything.
               When something or someone changes, another change comes into existence almost instantaneously to affect that person or thing. And the change which comes into existence, works within itself, evolves and designs itself in the best possible way to hit its target.
This is how anything malignant like bad company, virus and other organisms evolve when their hosts become stronger. Counter measures like medicines or just a talk with someone you know, help curb the problem but they don’t really help it entirely.
The only way that disease can be removed for good, is when you work towards it with dedication. Without dedication, it’s just another pill in your body or just another emotional talk with your friend or loved one and it’ll resurface pretty soon and this time it will be equipped with the technology to ward off the same pill or those talks.
 Acts of humanity are contagious too. It’s just that negativity has a super awesome arsenal with tons of tricks up its sleeves and people fall prey to its spell very easily and links to the chain just keep adding!
When a stranger stares at you, it is all but natural for you to stare back at him/her. How many times out of 10 would you smile back? People seem to find smiling a much harder act to do than to abuse!
I don’t count myself out. I am yet another free host in this world, which’s swarming with diseases that would absolutely love to thrive inside you. I fall prey to it all the time, though not as often as others would. It would be unjust to degrade myself that much. I think I’ve evolved a tad little bit at least, when compared to the growth negativity around me has gone through..
Haha as much as I know that many of you would love to bail out of this page ‘cause this sounds just like any other boring “Get Positive” seminar or whatever, I’d force you to read this if I could!!
There are people like Narayanan Krishnan (click his name to know more) who dedicate their lives to just one cause—To HELP. Some help animals and some help preserving the Environment.
Now, this is going to be a very offending question but I will ask it nevertheless—“Are you a part of any group which helps? If yes, do you really help?”.  “Do you ever help people when you think or know you can?”. If the answer’s a yes, you are awesome. If the answer’s a no, I’d love to help you :D
You see an accident and you see a huddle around the person who is injured, do you stop by and check if all’s good? It is a disheartening fact but people gather around an injured person to know what happened. They’re not all that bothered about what may happen! You might want to call your local hospital and notify them about this and ask for an ambulance if that person is that badly injured. Call an ambulance and leave. People around that person will be equipped with the story to tell the paramedics as to what happened. You don’t have to know if you were the person who helped that person, but when you flip through your newspaper the next day, you won’t have to live with the conscience of not helping that person when you could have. You just saved some newspaper space too!! You saved a life and you saved paper!
Yeah right—These are basics and you know it. Everyone does.!! Right?
We are all so comfortable within our boundaries that we forget ourselves. We lose our identities and we become ‘not-so-human’. May be I’m inviting a lot of criticism and revolt but that isn’t new to me. I do it all the time. I’m a critic who revolts a lot. Bring it on! I deserve it :-). I find difficulty in understanding the fact that people are more than willing to abuse or hit someone for free than finding willingness to help someone for free. If you expect someone to help you when you’re in a difficult situation, you have to tune yourself to return the favour, most times in advance. Someone has to be the first helper- why can’t it be you? {I hate to preach—FYI :D}... Dismiss negativity(not all of it- you can’t be me! :P) and download a trial version of “I will help” and install it on yourself. Try it before you reject it. Once you do, you’ll be able to reconcile better with yourself and your acts. Trust me.
Helping is a disease too. It takes a while to grow. It’s so slow that it often ends up on the losing side unless you help it! And it isn’t all that difficult. You don’t have to go to an orphanage, you don’t have to treat the wounded, you don’t have to touch blood, you don’t have to house all the stray animals nor do you have to shell anything from your pocket for a good cause.
You can start off with small things. I’d like to list a few. I mean it! Just a couple.. No, a couple x 2 :P
-->If you drive/ride a vehicle and you’re within city limits or there is enough traffic, so much that you can see the road without your “high beam” switched ON, please switch to “low beam”. You’re a victim of high beam headlight glare and you know just how much it blinds and irritates, don’t you? Just because you can see the road, it doesn’t mean you can’t involve yourself in an accident. Your headlights may blind the person coming towards you and he may come crashing right into you or any vehicle next to you. It’s a terrible thing to happen and I’ve seen them happen. So, Remember—“SWITCH to LOW BEAM when on roads with fairly good lighting”. You’re helping yourself in that process too. We don’t live in Arabia. Fuel costs a bomb!
 -->You see someone doing something which you can do very easily in no time and that person is taking a lifetime to do it, you may want to volunteer. I definitely don’t want you guys to take it literally and start pushing carts on the roads :D.
 -->Smile! That’s it. It is infectious and it can do wonders. Almost always does. Or at least does a ‘W’ in WONDER :D. Not a bad deal huh?
 -->You can donate your blood. Contact the red-cross and they’d be glad to take a unit of blood from you. What more? You get a free blood test and other results after the donation and you also get a red-cross card which entitles you to a unit of free blood if you or someone you know is in need of blood.
I can go on all day long but I’d only end up boring myself. That won’t ‘help’ me!!
There’s this friend of mine who drops people who ask for lift(hitchhikers). He never goes alone. His pillion seat is always occupied and it’s a stranger most times. Ask him and he’ll tell you he offers people a ride because he was offered a ride every day by someone he didn’t know of and there were many such people who offered him a ride when he hitchhiked a few years ago during college. He’s only returning the favour. Not to those kind people who helped him, but to himself. By helping. He’s keeping the tradition alive :-).
It’s not funny but I laughed the other day at something I not that amusing. Laughed because two people lost their chance and I took it. I started writing this blog post on Sunday(23rd Jan ’11) and I was returning home after class on the 24th.  I was taking a right, into the smaller road from the main road and I saw an elderly man rush towards my bike. I was perplexed and I rode away. I was scared for a moment. He was definitely in a hurry for I-don’t-know-what !! This post then struck me. I was thinking to myself “if I was even worth writing something like this, if I don’t practice it in real life”. I saw that man do the same thing to 2 others and they rode away, just like I did. I looked at that man and he bent his head. It wasn’t a comfortable feeling and I can’t/don’t/won’t explain here :D. I circled back towards him and he immediately climbed the backseat. It was weird. I asked him what he needed and he said he would be obliged to me if I could drop him till the bus stop. The bus stop was just a 2 minute walk from the place he was standing. He was trembling whilst talking to me and he told me he was operated on his leg after he banged his leg against his dining table. I was already riding when he was telling me all of this. He told me that he’s a diabetic patient and a small cut developed into a serious wound and it had to be surgically treated. We reached the bus stop and he held my hand and thanked me at least a dozen times, to which I couldn’t quite respond in any way. He took out a 10 Rupee note and handed it over to me, which I obviously declined. He said he was going to pick his grandson from school and was waiting at that spot for over 30 minutes and he was willing to pay for an auto-rikshaw till the bus stop. But no auto would take him till there?—Strange :-|.. I came home and I was thinking for a while—He had money but it was of no use. People didn’t help him and neither did the auto-rikshaw guys do their job.
When you help someone, the after effects are always good. Though you may not feel great after you’ve helped someone, the feeling that comes from the act is worth the act. It's a contagious disease and I want more people to fall prey to it!!
